As per a recent press release from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, for the first time in 11 years, the number of domestic patent filing has surpassed the number of international patent filing in India during Jan-Mar 2022.

The report also notes that the coordinated efforts by Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) and Intellectual Property (IP) office can help take India in the top 25 position in the Global Innovation Index.

The efforts of DPIIT have not only led to an increased awareness about Intellectual property and patents but has also increased filing of Patents by Indians. Filing of patents has increased by more than 50% in the last 7 years and for the first time in 11 years, the number of domestic patent filing has surpassed even the number of international patent filing in India during Jan-Mar 2022.

Also, nearly five-fold increase in grant of patents 2021-22 has been seen as compared to 2014-15.
